MEGA-Drill-Composite-MD-EdgePro
Self-sharpening EdgePro technology for maximum tool life in multidirectional CFRP materials
Clean cuts in CFRP composite materials require extremely sharp tools. Their cutting edges are consequently susceptible to wear and are therefore CVD diamond-coated. However, the coatings increase the cutting edge radius, which in turn has a negative impact on cutting performance. MAPAL addresses these challenges with the new EdgePro technology: The main cutting edge is laser-sharpened on the first clearance face. This process produces an extremely sharp cutting edge to prevent delamination. The remainder of the cutting edge is protected against wear by the CVD diamond coating.
The cutting-edge corner of the MEGA-Drill-Composite-MD-EdgePro is also designed for high stability. An integrated fibre catcher reliably cuts off protruding fibres that form when the drill is withdrawn. The newly developed HC611 CVD diamond coating also ensures low thermal loads and long cutting tool life. In addition to high hole quality and process reliability in series production, the drill enables cutting speeds up to 50% higher than those of conventional CFRP drills on the market.
The self-sharpening feature – which is unique on the market – offers further key benefits for users: consistently high hole quality and at least 50% longer cutting tool life. The MEGA-Drill-Composite-MD-EdgePro can be used wherever CFRP is machined – from the wind power and leisure industries to general industry. However, it delivers particular benefits in the aerospace industry, where the highest demands are placed on bore quality.
