What are the advantages of using Artificial Intelligence (AI) in machining, and how can the full potential of this technology be realised? This was a topic at the last digital business conference "UnternehmerTREFF digital" of the WiRO (business development corporation of East Württemberg). Matti Maier, responsible for AI projects in the MAPAL Group, showed examples from everyday working life at the precision tool manufacturing company. They are based on joint developments by MAPAL and its subsidiary c-Com. Applications for intelligent machining processes and the Smart Factory are created via c-Com's data platform. Around 50 entrepreneurs as well as experts from politics and research were given information about the applications of AI-based solutions. For example, MAPAL uses these solutions for inspecting the quality of tools and for searching causes in the production process. Other fields of application include goods logistics and the preservation or transfer of knowledge – an important issue in times of demographic change, as Matti Maier explained. According to him, consistent digitalisation and reliance on the interdisciplinary cooperation of specialists and on high-performance hardware was beneficial to a company. "With Artificial Intelligence, significant effects can be achieved in terms of sustainability, efficiency and knowledge preservation", the digital expert concluded.
